Earning Income After Retirement

Me and my “Puppy” 2013

Are you one of the 104 Million retirees who also happens to be a “baby boomer”?  Was Earning Income After Retirement something you were concerned about? When you retired I’ll bet you anything you didn’t count on not having enough money to live on. Right?

Baby boomers were born between 1946-1964. Yes, I am a “baby boomer” in my 60’s. Our numbers are impressive and we also have longevity thanks to medical technology and how well we take care of ourselves. Many will say that longevity is a good thing and that taking care of yourself is the best thing you can do to live a long healthy life.

However, these things can cause some challenges for most of us. You see, the longer we live the more money we will need. Earning income after retirement becomes an obsession.  Many of us are living on social security, retirement pensions, 401K and Roth accounts, and maybe if we are lucky, some personal savings.

May I be so nosy as to inquire?? How is that going for you? Your savings I mean……

Earning Money After Retirement Became #1 Priority.

My Story

Were you in anyway affected by the economy crunch in 2008?

My husband and I were. We saw our income drop from 6 figures to…….well let’s just say we had a lot of lifestyle changes to make in order to survive. It was brutal. Yes we had savings. But now we had to file for social security and start taking money out of our pensions. We knew that we could live in our home for about 4 more years before we had to make decisions.

Why? Because the mortgage was higher than we could afford. The money was going to run out. The measly monthly stipends of social security were not going to be enough.

So what did we do? We started planning to succeed. There was no way we would lose our home. We were going to plan the next phase of our lives…….

We would wait and put our house on the market at the slightest hint of the housing market improving. Which by the way did happen. We started making an exit plan. Instead of getting upset and worried. Have you ever heard the expression that “worry is a prayer for what you don’t want“? Well, I’m a true Pollyanna and totally believe that. Of course that meant tightening up the budget as well.

See my post Money Needed for Retirement.

Health Issues Made it Impossible for Earning Income After Retirement.

To make matters worse, both my husband and I had health problems. He had heart dis-ease and I had recently undergone back surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. We are both doing much better now. This is not intended to be a “downer” post. My point is that it did not look good for either one of us to go out looking for conventional jobs anytime soon. Once again, earning income after retirement did not seem feasible.

Besides, who in this day and age would hire sickly elder (close to retirement age) employees. As a matter of fact, my husband lost his job due to his age. You see he was earning a big salary and was the oldest employee and his bosses figured out a way to let him go. They thought they were smart. But I was smarter. We went to an attorney but unfortunately we lived in a “right to work” state and the laws favored the employer.

They did have to pay him any back pay and vacation money owed. It added up to thousands of dollars they were not planning on paying him. It’s hard to prove age discrimination and this was a case of age discrimination and the lawyer said as much. So we tucked our tails and moved on.

Earning Income After Retirement With New Possibilities!

We started the process of liquidating our assets. First, we put our home on the market since we knew the real estate market was in trouble and sales were down. We were told we would lose lots of money on our sale but we didn’t believe that. The real estate agent that told us that lost a sale because we hired someone who believed like we did. We would do well with the sale of our home! It sold quickly and for more than asking price.

Next, we had a large Estate Sale and sold everything we owned except for what we would take on our trip with us. We were moving to Puerto Rico with a poodle and 5 suitcases. The rest was sold or given away!

If you’ve never done anything like that, try it!…. It is liberating as hell and I couldn’t believe how good it felt.

I Never Felt so Scared And at The Same Time so Alive!

Now while all of this was going on. I started looking at ways for earning income after retirement on the internet. Yes I had dabbled on health supplements and health food websites online. But, this is a very competitive market and I had very little success sustaining a business. People are not loyal when they can find products for less money they jump ship and go. I made a little money. It was a joke!

Have you ever searched online for anything? There are tons of pages for anything you want or need under the sun.Earning Income After Retirement Where was I going to begin and how would I know what to look for? Well, unfortunately in my quest to earn income from home in retirement, I joined some unfavorable programs and got scammed. Some of these programs I paid hundreds of dollars a month for monthly premiums and for auto-ships. I stuck it out until I realized that it was not for me.

This Student was Ready and the Master Did Appear.

But one day, you see I do not give up easily, I stumbled upon something that I found to be exciting and interesting. It was something that I had given some thought to before but didn’t think I was capable of doing it. In my mind I thought it would be too complicated to learn and get started. I found the perfect earning income after retirement work from home opportunity!

How did I know it was right? I just did. Everything about it felt like this was an opportunity that had been waiting for me to find it. The Universe had responded to my prayers and hard work.

I found Affiliate Marketing. If you don’t know about affiliate marketing please check out my post How to Earn Money Working Online in Affiliate Marketing.

Sell Someone Else’s Products or Services For Commission

I discovered that I could sell someone’s products or services without having to inventory them for a commission. There is NO recruiting people – nor did I need auto-ships. It is very simple and not considered a pyramid scheme. Learning to build a website that I could easily maintain would be fun.  And, I get to recommend products that are related to my topic which in this case is affiliate marketing.

Rather than try to explain everything here. Let me show you how to get started with your own FREE membership to the company that has changed my life more than I could ever dream possible. This way you can take your time and tour to see if it is for you. Remember that it is FREE so you do not need a credit card or anything like.

    Hello Angela,

Wow, You and your husband sure have gone through a lot, but you both picked yourselves up and wiped your hands clean, and moved onwards and upwards. I know exactly how it feels to sell all of your belongings, as we did the same thing, as our family wanted to be closer to our family. It was scary at first but at the same time exciting to start fresh!
My husband and I are in our late 30’s with 4 children, we have no savings, no have no retirement plan. That is why I am looking online so that we can start earning extra money, and with that be able to put a percentage of it away for our retirement.

I’ve heard of Affiliate marketing before, I just might have to check out the program you are recommending, as it sounds like something I’d be interested in. Thanks so much! I’ll bookmark your website & check back again soon. 🙂

Hi Jennifer. So sorry I didn’t reply sooner. Yes, we are real pioneers and survivors. Life is too short and we don’t have time to feel sorry for ourselves. So we move forward. The hardest part was selling all my lovely belongings that I had grown quite attached to. It was scary for us too! I wish we had started sooner and had started working on home based business. As they say better late than never – right? You are both still young and have many opportunities ahead. I am sure you will do what is right for your family.

I promise you that Wealthy Affiliate is the right fit for you and your family. You will be able to build something of substance that will benefit you for years to come. I’m so happy you stopped by and read my post. I look forward to chatting with you again soon.
      Take care – Cheers.

Oh yes… Earning an income after retirement is going to be a problem for many and I am pleased you have achieved this while you still can. You have written a great piece here and it will inspire many who are or will be in a similar situation. You even moved to another ‘country’ and explained how that was wow how brave many would say but I say congratulations because you did it while you still could . Unfortunately many will leave it too late to start doing the ‘right’ thing for themselves. Instead they will wait for the Government to save them (the same government that has created the current mess) and be bitterly disappointed when it doesn’t happen. I agree with you totally about Wealthy Affiliate being an awesome place for anyone to get and education about how to make an income online and YES absolutely they have nothing to lose and almost every thing to again. Great post Thank you so much for sharing this information. 🙂

Yes many people get complacent and just like they believe the government will take care of them with social security, it’s not very secure as it is going broke, will never venture out of the “box of comfort” to help themselves financially. Although the baby boomers are the richest segment of the population many have not saved enough for retirement. There is renewed interest in home based businesses and many like myself have also decided it’s now or never to move to their favorite destination. Now I live where most people dream about vacationing……Wealthy Affiliate is making all this possible!

So happy you liked my post and hope to see you again soon! 🙂

Thanks for a great article. I am not near retirement but I have not managed to start saving for retirement and this is something that worries me. I worry even more now since I have 2 very young children. I can’t see how we will be able to pay for our kids to go to a good school and hopefully university too as well as plan for retirement. I found this information very useful and will definitely be checking out Wealthy Affiliate. Thank you!

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed reading your article. I, too, am a baby boomer. I am 55 and disabled. It’s really depressing. I have worked so hard all my life, raised 4 wonderful children, mostly by myself. And now the Dr’s tell me all the hard work I done in my youth has damaged nerves in my back and neck and they are inoperative. I went through all of my savings before I finally started receiving Social Security, which is a joke.

I, too, started searching online for some way to make money, because I know in my heart, it can be done. After losing tons on money, I really couldn’t spare, I found Wealthy Affiliate. I haven’t really made any money yet, but I know I will. It’s just a matter of time. Keep writing your articles and I look forward to reading more and following you as you become successful.

Hello Lureita. It warms my heart to know that you enjoyed my post so much. I can see by your information about yourself that we have experienced similar things in our lives. It really stinks that we work so hard and kill ourselves only to wind up sick when we get older. It is actually a story that is told over and over again by many. Fortunately, we have alternatives and ways to help ourselves with all the technology available to us.

I believe you will do well with Wealthy Affiliate as long as you do not give up and quit. It is important to me to prove to myself that just because I couldn’t achieve success in other online venture, doesn’t mean that I will never be successful. I know I will be! Wealthy Affiliate is all I need since they do what they say and I am further along because of my affiliation with them.

I plan to be here for a long time and look forward to seeing you around. Thanks again for stopping by.
Good luck in your business and remember – keep going forward, you can do it!
      All the best,
      Angela

It’s great that you shared your personal story – it’ll resonate with readers, especially with so many baby boomers who are also struggling financially. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to what you describe – age, illness, redundancy. You sound unbelievably brave to sell everything and start a life in another country! Are you still in Puerto Rico?

Yes I agree. Readers like to know that there is a real person behind the story. It’s important to me to help others and I hope I can do that with my honesty. It seems everyone is searching for something; hopefully I can provide some answers. The Internet has opened many doors for those who are willing to put in the time and work.

Most people my age do not just pick up and move to start over again. But, I’m not like most people. There is a ton of living to do NOW! Don’t know if I would ever get another chance. I was born here in Puerto Rico and had not returned except as vacationer from time to time. Always knew that I would return home and YES I am still here and have no plans to leave. This is a very exciting time for me in my LIFE!

Thank you for reading and responding to my post on Earning Income After Retirement.

You really went through hard times and sometimes these are sent to help us choose a different direction in life. As you were worrying about building up a retirement fund, the answer arrive. Harsh but effective and I believe for the good.

I also fell into the trap of scammers, but at least there is light at the end of the tunnel with programs such as Wealthy Affiliate.

Thank you for sharing your story it is an inspiration to not give up.

Hi Lis. You know that expression “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”? Well, I live by that. When you persevere long enough things come to you the way they are supposed to. I also believe we attract what we put our minds to.

Wealthy Affiliate was the platform I needed to help get me moving in the right direction so that I wouldn’t have to keep looking anymore and could finally relax about my future and earning income after retirement.

You are welcome and thank you for reading my article and leaving a comment. I am also happy I was able to inspire you.

      All the best to you,
